How to go where you meant to go

Have you ever wanted to try out a new route, but were nervous about getting lost? Do you want to be able to put your phone or gps in your pocket for your entire backpacking trip? Or do you just want to know what all the squiggly lines on the map are about? You’ve come to the right place!

Knowing where you are and where you’re heading in the wilderness can be an essential and empowering tool in the backcountry. In this day-long course you will learn how to relate features on a topographical map to your surroundings through creative and playful ways of learning. You’ll be able to tell at a glance where the cliffs are and how hard the trip you’re contemplating actually is. We will cover how to use a compass along with your map to figure out which mountains you’re looking at (and if you’re going the right way!). Smartphones and gps are useful tools, but it’s great to be able to unplug and know you’re fine even if the batteries run out. Maybe you’re an off trail mushroom forager, a seasonal hunter, a nature loving wanderer, or someone who wants to be confident in their day hikes… whatever your goal is we can assure you will be able to find your way back home and have fun doing it after taking this course!
